The West County Community Hope Center (WCCHC), a faith based nonprofit, provides religious, educational and charitable support to families and individuals in need in the West St Francois County and surrounding areas. WCCHC is housed in a neutral facility (not a church) within the community .
The West County Community is comprised of several small towns, Leadwood, Irondale, Frankclay, Wortham, and a portion of Terre Du Lac with a total population for the area of just over 5,000. This was at one time a mining region but that industry ended fifty years ago, which led to a slow decline in all the communities. Presently the only businesses that remain in Leadwood are a gas station with a quick shop and a Dollar General store. Irondale and Terre Du Lac each have a gas station, small restaurant, bank and grocery store. The residents of the communities must travel 10-15 miles to Park Hills, Farmington, or Potosi to obtain services from government agencies or non-profits. The West St. Francois County R-4 School District is the center of the community and provides a quality education to our children. The rate of students qualifying for free and reduced lunches in the district is over 60%, it’s estimated that 10% of the students are homeless, and it is estimated that 22% of our district is below the poverty line. Recognizing the unmet needs within the community a group of individuals with ties to the community began to meet in January of 2019. This group worked with the West County ministerial alliance, the West County School District, and community leaders to determine needs and formulate plans to implement a holistic approach to impacting the lives of the marginalized within our district.
